Oh, blueberries, nothin' like ya. They're far and away my favorite fruit, and when they're in season sometimes I think I'll turn blue from eating them at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, I've stopped buying them from the grocery as they come in plastic packaging--typically the plastic clamshells are recyclable, but the idea of an out-of-season fruit traveling thousands of miles in a piece of plastic just to be gobbled up in a matter of days has become weird to me. When they're in season, I can purchase them from the farmers' market into cotton produce bags I bring with me. No trash, lots of berries.

Last summer, it was all blueberries all the time around my house, but the ensuing berry drought through the fall-winter-spring led me to craftier measures this year. This summer, I bought them from the farmers' market in large quantities and stuck them unwashed on a sheet pan in the freezer. Once they were frozen, I corralled them in glass jars in the back of the freezer. When I'm ready to eat them, I'll take them out and give them a quick rinse. Throughout the year, they'll be tasty on pancakes, in oatmeal, and eaten plain.
